Not For Kids

Any one today would say that the most popular cartoons today are not really for kids to watch. These shows there are out today do have some content that are not suitable for children. Shows like Family guy, Cleveland Show, American Dad, South Park are not like the old shows that used to come on television. They have incidences that are more adult oriented and references that kids would not understand.  These shows do have a parental supervision warning before they air on television, which pretty much says, this is for adults. Yet somehow these shows are most popular with those exact kids that they are not aimed towards. Then the parents blame the creators for making a show of this caliber. That problem was mentioned in one family guy episode. It pretty mush said that they are the one to blame for what their kids watch. That leads to another issue. The way these cartoons are and the things that do go on in them seem to be the way shows in general seem to be going. They get away with a lot of things that would have gotten them in whole lot of trouble just a couple of years ago. It just shows how things are changing.

My Top Cartoons

Top ten cartoons from my passed

In the 90’s there were a ton of cartoons on every day. Therefore since there were so many cartoons then to watch I am making a top ten. The list below is the top ten shows that I would watch in morning before school and right after school when I got home. Granted this not all the shows I watched. It is the ones I watched the most. It was a lot harder to pick these then I thought, but these are the ones I came up with.

Johnny Bravo

This show was about a stereotypical, self-centered, muscle bound air head that lived with his mom. Johnny continuously walks around his neighborhood trying to pick up girls with horrible pick-up lines and gloating about himself. While that is going on he continues to run into his little neighbor Suzy who is clearly more grown up then he is.

Powerpuff Girls

“Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice.” Yes. I admittedly watched the Powerpuff Girls. The show is about three special little girls were created by Professor Utonium. However they were born with superpowers. Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup where then deemed the protectors of the City of Townsville. They were to protect the people from all enemies such as the infamous Mojo Jojo and the mysterious “Him.”

TMNT

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the story of four baby turtles that fell into some chemical in the sewers of Manhattan which turned them into human like creatures. They were found and trained by a mutant sewer rat who became their master, Master Splinter. The turtles are, Leonardo, the oldest and leader of the turtles. Raphael, The hot head of the group. He is always ready to fight. He is all about attack first, ask questions later.  Also jealous of Leonardo and thinks he should be the leader instead. Michelangelo is the easy going one of all the turtles. All he wants to do is read comics, eat pizza, and skateboard. Donatello is the smartest one. He rather not deal with the violence and mess around with the techy stuff.     Alongside them is April and Casey who help them in the constant fight against Shredder and his foot soilders.

Dexter’s Lab

The show as about a little genius boy who built his own laboratory under is house. He goes on multiple adventures throughout the show. While doing so he has deal with his loopy sister Dee Dee constantly messing up his work and plans. Also competing with his arch nemesis Mandark

Pinky and the Brain

It is a show where two lab rats are on a continuous mission to take over the world. Well at least one of them are. That would be The Brain. He (The Brain) is supposedly the “brains” behind the operation. Whereas his partner in crime is not always on the same page as the brain. Pinky is goofy sidekick and is basically just going for the ride as the brain does whatever it takes to rule the world.

Scooby Doo

Scooby Doo and the mystery team solved crimes around the world. The people on the team were Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy. Velma being the smart one usually figuring out who the culprit is by time they catch them.

Samurai Jack

Samurai Jack is about the journey of a samurai trying to return back to his time, after being thrown into a time portal, sending him into the future.  The enemy being Aku, Jack is fighting to get home and to defeat the evil Aku and avenging his father and his family.

Animaniacs

The crazy adventures of Yakko, Wakko, and their little sister Dot is what the show was based on. Seeing them do the most random things throughout the show without any real consequence.

Looney Tunes

The classic that is the Loony Tunes.  With all of their famous characters and memorable moments people will never forget. Characters like Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, Sylvester, Roadrunner, Daffy Duck and the most famous Bugs Bunny. Watching characters like Sylvester the cat try to eat Tweety Bird and fail every time.

Dragon Ball Z

This was definitely one of the more action packed shows back then. Every day after school at 3 it was normal to rush home and sit in front of the television until it came on. Goku, the main character, was helping to protect the world from the villans that would come and go. All the fighting and different creatures and enemies, all of them fighting to collect seven balls to have one wish.

If you disagree with the list that I have Please let me know which cartoon(s) you think should be there.

The Numbers

Then

If you were born in the 90's, or shortly after, you probably know about the cartoons that were popular in that time. There was not a time where kids then would not talk about the cartoon that was on last night or last week, then going home and waiting for the next episode. As a kid I watched a ton of cartoons. Mainly I watched Cartoon Network but there were cartoons on all the time, in the morning before school and after school at 3 pm. It was the thing to do when I was a kid. Now days I notice it has changed. I would say because of technology, kids today do not watch cartoons any more. They are now looking forward to the next jersey shore or real world episode or who gets punched in the face next. Another reason why things have changed is because there are not a lot of popular cartoons out there any more.
I know for a fact that if someone from born around the 90's and watched cartoons was asked to name some cartoons they watched as a kid, they could name about 10-20 different cartoons; where as today i am not sure if you could ask a kid today the same question and they could barely name 10. Maybe it is just the times moving on. Most people would say that cartoons are no longer cool. many people would say that everything for cartoons have already been done. who really knows the reason for the diminishing number of popular cartoons. all that is known is that it has changed dramatically and not going back any time soon.
